A fish who dreams of climbing trees. A monkey who believes in him. A jungle full of animals who think he's crazy.
But when a jungle emergency turns the whole forest upside down, Flynn discovers a strength he never knew he had—and a world waiting just for him.
An illustrated picture book for ages 4–8 about trying again, believing in yourself, and discovering what makes you special.
Three moments from the book, illustrated by Sarah Keele.
You might feel like you're Flynn—
like your dreams are out of place.
You might feel like you're different.
And if that is the case:
Be yourself. Try new things.
Keep going. Give it time.
And through it all, remember…
The Fish Who Tried to Climb.
Zack Oates is an author, entrepreneur, father of four, and passionate believer in chasing big dreams—even the impossible ones. He's been recognized as a Top 100 Entrepreneur and hosts a popular business podcast.
This is his first children's book, inspired by his own journey of feeling out of place in a family of athletes. He grew up feeling like a fish trying to climb—and wrote this book so every kid who feels different knows there's a world waiting just for them.
Sarah Keele is best known for her work as an illustrator in the board game industry, but has done art for book covers, magazines, and murals.
She was born seaside in Monterey, California, grew up on the east coast playing in the woods and catching fish in Virginia, and spent hot summers as a lifeguard in Texas. She now lives in Utah with her 3 kids. Her inspiration comes from her love of life, nature, and the idea that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.
